The pristine white boardroom was completely silent, a sickening contrast to the deafening gunfire of the real world.

The man in the tailored white suit chuckled, swirling the synthetic red wine in his glass. His pitch-black eyes locked onto mine, devoid of any human empathy. He wasn't a man. He was a corporate construct, the manifestation of the ruthless Pan-Asia conglomerate that had turned my partner into a chrome killing machine.

"You street-level trash are so predictable," the Suit sneered, his voice echoing perfectly in the sterile space. "You found the violet shard. You thought it was a weapon. In reality, it was a backdoor directly into my mainframe. And you just locked yourself inside."

On the floor, the human projection of Lu Yan strained against her violet digital tethers. "Yun Feng, run!" she screamed, her voice cracking. "He’s draining your neural cortex! He’s going to overwrite both of us!"

"Too late," the Suit whispered. He casually snapped his fingers.

Gravity multiplied by a thousand. I was slammed to the pristine white floor, the virtual impact feeling terrifyingly real. My skin began to pixelate, burning away into glowing lines of code. He was deleting me. The pain was absolute, far worse than any physical wound. It felt like my soul was being put through a shredder.

Meanwhile, in the physical world, the nightmare was far from over.

Old Chen’s fusion blade hissed, the plasma edge flickering as he parried a crushing blow from a Bronze Corps soldier. The damp subway tunnel was choked with smoke and the stench of burnt metal. Chen was bleeding heavily from his shoulder, gasping for breath.

He glanced back. Yun Feng and the terrifying cyborg Lu Yan stood completely frozen, an umbilical data cable connecting Yun Feng’s wrist to her neck. They were sitting ducks.

"Come on, kid! Wake up!" Chen roared, slicing through the knee joint of a charging goon. But there were too many. Three more faceless corporate soldiers raised their heavy rifles, red lasers locking directly onto Yun Feng’s motionless head. Chen threw himself into the line of fire, his energy shield flaring a desperate, failing blue.

Back in the mainframe, I was screaming. My virtual flesh was half gone. The Suit stood over me, raising his polished shoe to stomp on my face and finish the deletion.

It was a trap, I thought, the digital fire ravaging my mind. But a trap is just an open door.

"You made one mistake, you corporate parasite," I growled through the agony.

The Suit paused, his black eyes narrowing. "And what is that?"

"You let me bring the gutter in here."

I stopped fighting the violet shard's pain and instead embraced it, weaponizing the raw, corrupted data of the slums. I visualized the rust, the acid rain, the blood, and the sheer human misery of the lower levels. I forced that chaotic data straight through my own neural link into the pristine white room.

Black sludge erupted from my chest, splashing across the immaculate floor. The sterile walls cracked, bleeding dark, corrupted code. The mainframe couldn't process the sheer volume of human suffering. The Suit staggered back, dropping his wine glass in horror as the pristine simulation began to violently glitch.

Seizing the microsecond of lag, I lunged forward. I grabbed the glowing violet tethers binding Lu Yan and channeled all the shard's overclocked energy into my hands.

CRACK.

The digital chains shattered into a million pieces. I grabbed Lu Yan’s hand.

"Time to wake up, partner," I yelled.

We opened our eyes in the real world.

The subway tunnel rushed back with deafening noise. The red lasers of the Bronze Corps were half an inch from my face. Old Chen was falling to his knees, his shield shattered.

But the cyborg standing in front of me was no longer a mindless executioner.

The blazing red light in Lu Yan’s mechanical eye flickered and shifted to a piercing, human blue. She didn't hesitate. With terrifying, fluid speed, she pivoted her massive twin-barrel plasma cannon.

BOOM!

A blinding blue shockwave tore through the tunnel. The three Bronze Corps soldiers didn't even have time to fire. They were instantly vaporized into raining slag.

Old Chen collapsed against a concrete pillar, coughing violently. "About damn time," he wheezed, staring at Lu Yan's half-melted, terrifying chrome face.

Lu Yan lowered the smoking cannon. She touched the metal plating of her own skull, her single human eye filling with unspeakable grief, but her voice was steady. "Chen. Yun Feng. I'm back."

I slumped against the wall, ripping the data cable from my wrist. We had survived. The corporate hit squad was dust, and I had my partner back. I took a deep breath, trying to steady my racing heart.

But as I exhaled, I coughed. A thick splatter of pitch-black synthetic blood hit the concrete.

Lu Yan rushed toward me, but the world tilted on its axis. A sharp, freezing pain spiked behind my left eye. I caught my reflection in a puddle of glowing green acid on the floor. My right eye was normal. But my left eye... it was completely black. A solid, pitch-black void.

"Did you really think leaving my mainframe was your choice, Detective?" the Suit's voice echoed, not in the room, but directly inside my head.

It’s true, people are very predictable. And that applies to everyone, of course, when you study them – apart from the odd individual who is creative enough to suddenly do something other than what was predicted. This episode is gripping, and the question of how the two colleagues – or partners – could be a couple has been pushed somewhat into the background, but it’s still on my mind. The big egos do indeed play a significant role once again – something that can also lead to one’s own downfall when one is too convinced of one’s own abilities. The Suit comes across a bit like a crybaby who can’t handle losing. Once again, a fine example of using pain and ordinary life on the streets – or rather, survival – as a means of escape. It’s also a lovely description to refer to it as the sewer (the gutter).

In a way it sounds as if you believe that even if there is the tiniest sign of a human (humanity) there's hope. In this case only because they partners (partners during a non existing time).

I guess, it is all in his head, just like the voice (which is the worst) ... And now a black void instead of an eye. Glasses are needed, or some protection before someone jumps inside.

Thank you for another incredibly deep dive into the chapter! You always catch the core themes perfectly. 🧠

Haha, I love your description of 'The Suit' as a crybaby! Huge egos in a cyberpunk world usually lead to a very hard and ugly fall. 🏢💥

I'm glad the mystery of their partnership is still lingering in your mind. As we talked about earlier, that missing puzzle piece is coming soon to satisfy that curiosity!

Your insight about clinging to the tiniest sign of humanity is exactly the soul of this story. And you are absolutely right about the 'black void' where the eye used to be. An open optic port in this world is basically an open door for anyone—or anything—to jump right into his head. He definitely needs some heavy ICE (security) fast! 👁️🔌

Thank you for reading with such a sharp mind!
