Inktober 2026 #4: Cactus
There is a wide variety of cactus around. I wrote this prompt in my freewrite Cactus how Ray's father liked and kept a cactus in his home office. I chose a photo for the freewrite and that is the variety I drew.
Armed with a pencil, I started sketching:
And then braved myself with the Sharpie:
Rubbed off the pencil markings:
And complete it with some pencil coloring:
I do realize I am quite two dimensional and realism is quite a far cry.

Inktober #4: Cactus
Ese proceso de pasar el lápiz, después el Sharpie y borrar las marcas es el que más enseña, lo que aprendí es que ahí se ve si el dibujo aguanta o no. Me quedó claro que el cactus lo sacaste de la foto del freewrite donde el papá de Ray lo tenía en la oficina, buen detalle ese. Sin vueltas: lo bidimensional no es defecto, es estilo, seguí con el reto.

Awww thank you. I admire those who can just draw straight with ink or paint directly on canvas. I am just too afraid to do that haha. And thank you for helping me erase my self doubt. I will take it as a style :)

Ohhh.. wow.. cleaning a horse using a vacuum!! That is so cool! And really nice and clean after eh from all the dirt.
A cactus seem to be easy to keep. With us they are expensive and flowers are mostly glued on it to make them more attractive.
If you ask me, everyone can see what this is.
Place shadow on cactus, pot and underneath at the same side.
If you want that cactus to look more 3D you can leave a lighter shade in the middle or at the right of the middle, same for the pot. Or you add some striped in the middle of the pot.
Nevertheless, there's no need to be realistic. It looks like you have your own style, which is all that counts.

It seemed easy and you would think how can one die but mine dies in my hands😭My balcony doesn't have enough sun.
Ah shadow. is one I get confused with sometimes, i.e. where should the shadow be. Sometimes I overdraw the shadow at places it shouldn't be. Ohh.. 3D is to add a lighter shade? Ok ok.. will try and see.
Think my style is simple cartoon but not cartoon haha.
