Inktober 2026: Day 5 - Smack 👊🏼

Good afternoon, my dearest #Steemit readers! Happy Tuesday to everyone—I hope you’re off to a great start to the week. This is your friend Manuel here, and I’m really excited to share a new #steemexclusive digital illustration that I finished yesterday. This time, I wanted to continue participating in the #Inktober2026 challenge. Yesterday’s keyword was “SMACK,” and my idea was to create a grayscale illustration of a pair of cats: a very small kitten being scolded and hit on the head by its much larger sibling. I hope you really like this idea, and here I’ll share a bit of the process behind how I created this piece!

Muy buenas tardes mis queridísimos lectores y lectoras de #Steemit, feliz martes para todos, espero que estén teniendo un excelente inicio de semana. Por aquí los saluda su amigo Manuel, muy emocionado de compartirles una nueva ilustración #steemexclusive digital que terminé el día de ayer. En esta oportunidad, quise seguir participando en la dinámica del #Inktober2026, La palabra clave del día de ayer fue "SMACK", la cual se traduce como "Golpe", y la idea que tuve fue la de realizar una ilustración en escala de grises de un par de gatos: un gatito muy pequeño siendo regañado y golpeado en la cabeza por su hermano mucho más grande. ¡Espero que les guste mucho esta idea y aquí les compartiré un poco del proceso de cómo realicé esta obra!

PROCESS / PROCESO

For the character's concept and design, I chose a narrative and highly expressive composition featuring two feline siblings in a humorous scene. I drew the larger, shagier cat sitting upright with his paw resting directly on his little brother's head, while the younger cat squints with a comical look of annoyance.

Para el concepto y diseño del personaje, elegí una composición narrativa y muy expresiva protagonizada por dos hermanos felinos en una escena divertida. Dibujé al gato más grande y peludo sentado erguido mientras apoya su pata directamente sobre la cabeza de su hermano pequeño, quien entorna los ojos con una cómica expresión de molestia.

For the details and rendering, I worked carefully on smoothing the monochrome fur volume and shading their bodies using soft airbrush techniques. I detailed the sharp contrast between deep shadows and smooth highlights along their fur, polished their expressive eyes, whiskers, and small fangs, and defined the soft shadows projected onto the ground.

Para los detalles y el renderizado, trabajé cuidadosamente en suavizar el volumen del pelaje monocromático y sombrear sus cuerpos mediante la técnica de aerógrafo. Detallé el contraste entre las sombras profundas y los reflejos suaves en su pelaje, pulí sus ojos expresivos, bigotes y pequeños colmillos, y definí las sombras suaves proyectadas sobre el suelo.

For the lighting and atmosphere, I set the scene against a clean background with soft radial gradients in shades of gray. For the light source coming from above, I decided to create a small spotlight or light bulb that illuminates and highlights the tops of their ears, paws, and backs, giving both cats a solid three-dimensional form and emphasizing that cozy, comical vibe that’s perfect for Inktober.

Para la iluminación y la ambientación, ubiqué la escena sobre un fondo limpio con suaves degradados radiales en tonos grises. La fuente de luz proveniente desde la parte superior se me ocurrio crear un pequeño foco o bombilla iluminando, resaltando la parte superior de sus orejas, patas y lomos, otorgando a ambos gatos un volumen tridimensional sólido y resaltando esa vibra acogedora y cómica ideal para el Inktober.
