Inktober 2026 | #16 Gangly
Today, I was exploring the adjective "gangly" to brainstorm ideas for my drawing for the sixteenth prompt of Inktober. Just as there are people who are lanky, long-legged, and very thin, there are animals that fit this description, too—and I found some perfect examples. I wanted to draw an animal with these traits, but something other than a greyhound or a giraffe. I went to Pixabay and searched for "ostrich." I picked out a photo that I found absolutely charming: it shows a solitary ostrich with its neck tucked in, rather than held upright as we usually see them. Voilà—my model! I thought it was lovely—and I also discovered, in the photographer's profile, that she is passionate about protecting all animal species. I started with a graphite pencil, sketching the ostrich's face before moving on to the rest of its body; given the intricate details of the plumage, I simply drew a few lines as a reference. Next, I began outlining the neck, head, and legs with a black pen, leaving the plumage for last. I enjoyed depicting the plumage using various pen strokes, following the reference photo. Finally, I drew lines to represent the division between the wall and the floor, adding shading with the pen and incorporating some scribbles. I’m really pleased with the result, though I feel that by adding the background, the ostrich lost a bit of its prominence; for that reason, I also filled in the ground area with gray scribbles. A very interesting way to depict ostrich feathers, and you’ve done an excellent job with it! :)
Oh, thank you!
Thanks, thanks! Hehe.
I’m also expanding my own vocabulary a bit through this activity—it’s all part of learning English. Even if I’ve come across a word before, I rarely use it (in English), and while some words can have multiple meanings, that’s not the case here. If you have long, thin legs and a bit of a stoop, it fits.
As for the Spanish term desgarbado—I don’t use it often, but I actually like the word itself, hehe; maybe it’s the way it sounds. I just learned that it comes from garbo—implying a lack of it! 🙄
It didn’t sit right with me, though—I’m not a fan of these somewhat classist labels. I refuse to say that this lovely ostrich lacks grace!

¡Buen trabajo! También me encanta el avestruz 👍🏼
Thank you very much. I'm glad You liked it.
